FOTOFEST 2012 BIENNIAL FotoFest Events

The FotoFest Biennial is the first and longest running Biennial of its kind in the United States, and one of the largest photography events in the world.

The 2012 Biennial is a citywide event, with over 120 participating museums, art galleries, non-profit arts organizations, universities, civic organizations and corporate spaces across Houston, Harris County and Galveston. 


PUBLIC EVENTS

120 photographic arts Exhibitions, the International Fine Print Auction, Artist and Curator Talks, Films, Workshops, Forums, Dance, opportunities to interact with artists, Photography Bookstores and Book Signings, free guided Exhibit Tours, Bus and Bicycle Tours to galleries, and Activities for Students.

MAP/CALENDARS AND CATALOGUES

FotoFest publishes and distributes citywide, a free comprehensive Biennial Map and Calendar, available at exhibition venues, participating spaces, restaurants and other locations around Houston. The Biennial Map and Calendar are also available online.

FotoFest has co-published the two-volume 2012 Biennial Catalogue with European publisher Schilt Publishing (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The 360-page Russian Exhibitions catalogue features more than 300 full-color images by Russian artists and essays by Russian Curators Evgeny Berezner and Irina Chmyreva on the history of contemporary Russian photography since the late 1940s: the re-emergence and evolution of the personal voice in Russian art photography and the end of Stalinism through the Perestroika years into the present. The 304-page Volume II features 45 Participating Spaces Exhibitions, FotoFest's Biennial Discoveries of the Meeting Place and FotoFest Inter-Biennial Exhibitions.

The FotoFest 2012 Biennial Catalogue is in very limited availability due to strong sales in March. A hard bound version of volume one, focused on FotoFest's Contemporary Russian Photography exhibitions is planned for later in 2012. OPENING NIGHT PARTY
Friday, March 16, 2012, 8pm - midnight

The FotoFest 2012 Biennial  opened March 16 with a giant party at FotoFest Headquarteers in downtown Houston. The party featureed music by Grady Gaines, dancing, food and drinks.

The free, public Opening Night Party drew  a record  four thousand people to celebrate the kick off to the 2012 Biennial and the opening of the Contemporary Russian Photography exhibition The Young Generation, 2007-2012.

Complimentary refreshments were provided by Saint Arnold Brewing CompanyLa Fuente Winery and Russian Standard Vodka. The VIP dinner was catered by City Kitchen and a selection of food truck vendors was available for hungry members of the public.

 




EXHIBITIONS
March 16 - April 29, 2012

FotoFest's own exhibitions for the FotoFest 2012 Biennial focus on Contemporary Russian Photography through three multi-media, photography, and video exhibitions.

FotoFest's Russian exhibitions are joined by over 120 independent exhibitions at Participating Spaces across Houston, Harris County and Galveston.

All exhibitions are open to the public and almost all are free. Yellow and black street markers signal FotoFest events or the individual exhibitions organized by FotoFest. Red and black street markers mark clusters of Participating Spaces. Many FotoFest Biennial exhibitions are clustered close to each other in various neighborhoods.

FINE PRINT AUCTION
Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Over four hundred guests filled the ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton Houston Downtown for FotoFest's 2012 International Fine Print Auction. Thirty-nine sponsor tables were filled with collectors, patrons, guests and artists from Russia, Western Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada and the United States. Heritage Auctions and Auctioneer Madelaine Brophy, led FotoFest’s Auction for the first time.  The FotoFest 2012 Fine Print Auction earned $366,500 with print sales and table sponsorships.  Prices ranged from $17,000 to $1,500, with sales being 10% higher than FotoFest’s last biennial Auction in 2010.  

Bidding was very strong and all eighty-two prints were sold - 30 of were donated by Russian, Ukrainian and Belarus artists. It was the first time a substantial offering of high quality works by respected contemporary Russian, Ukrainian and Belarus artists were offered in the U.S. The Auction drew institutional and private collectors from Brazil, Russia, France, Mexico and the U.S.

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS AND EVENINGS WITH ARTISTS
March 16 - April 3, 2012

The 2012 FotoFest Meeting Place Portfolio Review Program brought together over 165 arts professionals and 500 artists. The portfolio was held for sixteen days, March 16 – April 3, 2012.  Reviewers selected by FotoFest came from 24 countries and 21 states in the U.S.  Registered artists came from 34 countries and 37 states in the U.S. 

A favorite program at the Meeting Place is the Evenings with the Artists – Open Portfolio Nights. A free event that is offered to all registrants of the Meeting Place, Evenings with the Artists are designed to connect artists with the broader art-loving public and collectors outside the formal portfolio reviews. It allows reviewers to look at the work of all participating artists. Exhibiting artists in FotoFest’s own Biennial exhibitions and those from Participating Spaces may also show work at Evenings with the Artists.

All 2012 Meeting Place artists took part in the Evenings with Artists. Seven hundred viewers attended the four Evenings, one for each portfolio review session. Artists sold work, engaged viewers in lively conversations about their art. The general public had a first-hand encounter with over 500 artists and their art works

BOOKSTORES AND BOOK SIGNINGS

Throughout the first three weeks of the Biennial, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and photo-eye
Bookstore in Santa Fe, NM, had Bookstores with rare, vintage and contemporary photo books for sale. FotoFest sponsored eight artist and curator Book Signings as well. The bookstores were located at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel with the Meeting Place.

Media and Marketing Experts, Artists, Curators and other photography professionals brought their knowledge and experience of art, the internet, social media networks, multi-media platforms, and curating in the contemporary art world to the three 2012 Biennial Workshops. Experts led discussions on book publishing, intellectual property laws and business opportunities for artists.

Each of the four Meeting Place Portfolio Review sessions connected to one or more of the Workshops and discounts were offered for students and Meeting Place participants.

As a platform for art and ideas, FotoFest is always expanding the range of its programming, including tours, dance performances, a poetry showcase, and a family-friendly activity day.

The FotoFest Bike Scrambles are two free, docent-lead bicycle tours of FotoFest and Participating Spaces exhibitions in April. The leisurely rides are adequate for riders of all abilities.

FotoFest's Exhibition Expeditions, are guided evening bus tours designed for professional. The weeknight evening tours visit a number of spaces before ending the night with a prix-fixe dinner at a restaurant. Space is limited.

TOURS AND BIENNIAL CURRICULUM FOR STUDENTS - Free 
Free  tours for students of all ages are available, organized by FotoFest's education program Literacy Through Photography. A free Biennial Curriculum is available for educators to use with primary and secondary students. Questions within the curriculum resemble the structure and purpose of questions on the new Texas STAAR exams and addresses topics in multiple subject areas including English/Language Arts, Social Studies and  Visual Arts.
